The Georgian Institute for Research and Innovation (GIRI) is a non-profit research institute based in Tbilisi. We study how artificial intelligence is governed, what it costs the environment, and how small research systems integrate into the European Research Area, and we use what we find to strengthen Georgia's research and innovation ecosystem.
Founded in 2024, GIRI organises its work in three research lines: AI governance and data protection; sustainable and frugal AI; and research and innovation systems. We work through a core team and affiliated researchers from Georgian universities and institutes, publish our results as open-access working papers and policy briefs, and translate them into policy advice, training for researchers and research managers, and international projects with European partners.
Mission:
Our mission is to produce evidence on AI governance, sustainable AI and research and innovation systems, and to use it to strengthen Georgia's research culture, modernise its higher education, and integrate the country into the European Research Area (ERA).
What we do:

We publish our results as open-access working papers and policy briefs, and we turn them into R&I policy advice, training for researchers and research managers, and international projects (Horizon Europe, Erasmus+) with European partners.
GIRI is a bridge between research and practice, and between people who have ideas and the systems that can help those ideas grow.
